CRB Disclosures
A Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure is a means whereby an employer (or Voluntary Organisation) can ascertain whether their employees (or volunteers) have previous criminal convictions or whether their details are on certain lists that prohibit them from working with either Children or Vulnerable Adults.
There are three levels of Disclosure available – Basic, Standard and Enhanced.
It is the actual role undertaken that dictates the level of Disclosure available to an employer, for instance a Basic Disclosure shows only details of unspent Criminal Convictions and is useful when an employer is not entitled to seek a higher level check.
Standard and Enhanced CRB Disclosures are generally only available to employers who engage individuals (salaried or volunteer) to work with children and / or Vulnerable Adults or in other certain specified roles such as in the Medical Profession, Judiciary and Financial Service positions. These checks not only show details of Spent and Unspent Criminal Convictions but also whether an individual is prohibited from working with children or Vulnerable Adults or the existence of other relevant information that could possibly impact upon a recruitment decision.
The full consent of the individual concerned is required before any level of check can be requested.
As a registered CRB Umbrella Body we are authorised to act on behalf of any employer (or Voluntary Organisation to obtain Basic, Standard and Enhanced CRB Disclosures. You may also wish to visit the CRB Disclosure Web Site at www.disclosure.gov.uk
If you are considering accepting a previously issued Disclosure Certificate obtained by another organisation please look first at the advice offered by the CRB who refer to this under the heading of Portability.
Self employed persons cannot seek a Disclosure on themselves.
If you are an employer who require CRB Disclosures you will have to undertake to abide by the CRB Code of Practice and have in place your own written policies regarding 'The Secure Handling of Disclosure Information' and 'The employment of Ex-offenders'. These specimen policies are designed to be adapted for your use.
